Tickets: Queer As Faust cabaret & the Elizabeth Whitney shows: $15 general admission $10 for students, seniors, and persons with disabilities. “Brother to Brother” $5 admission charge. "For the Bible Tells Me So" Free; donations for Fairness For All Families accepted. Festival passes: (20-percent discount) $40 general admission $28 for students, seniors and persons with disabilities. Tallahassee—The gay and lesbian subculture of the Harlem Renaissance and the understanding of what the Bible means to five average American families with gay relatives are the themes of two feature-length films playing at the Mickee Faust Clubhouse, 623 McDonnell Drive, this June. The movies round out a month-long celebration of Gay Pride in Tallahassee and our part of the company’s “Queer As Faust” festival.

Brother to Brother

Friday, June 27th, the Faustkateers show “Brother to Brother”, a film from Wolfe Video and directed by Rodney Evans. The narrative follows the emotional and psychological journey of a young black gay artist as he discovers the hidden legacies of the gay and lesbian subcultures within the Harlem Renaissance. After being found in an intimate, sexual encounter with another young man, Perry is thrown out of his house by his family and forced to survive on his own. As he struggles to hold on by working in a homeless shelter and trying to maintain a college scholarship, he befriends an older poet whose lessons shed light on Perry’s struggle with homosexuality, and their condemnation of his desires. Tickets to this movie are $5.

For the Bible Tells Me So

Saturday, June 28th, the focus shifts to homosexuality and religion with “For the Bible Tells Me So”, an award-winning documentary by Daniel Karslake from First Run Features. The movie poses several questions for the audience to consider: does God really condemn loving homosexual relationships? Is the chasm separating Christianity from gays and lesbians too wide to cross? Through the experiences of five Christian, American families—including those of former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson—we discover how people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child or family member. The film offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity. Other commentary in the film offered by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rabbi Brian Zachary Mayer and Reverend Irene Monroe. There is no admission fee; however donations will be collected for Fairness For All Families.
